Find out how to live longer at free Brighton lecture
One of Britain’s leading experts on healthier lifestyles and living longer is giving a free lecture in Brighton.
Professor Sir Michael Marmot will talk about ways to create fairer and healthier societies when he speaks at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Sir Michael, 69, the professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London, has led research groups on health inequalities for over 35 years.
He has studied the key factors for a long and healthy life and how status, income and postcode can affect life expectancy.
In his book “The Status Syndrome: How your social standing directly affects your health and life expectancy”, he said that socio-economic position was an important factor in health outcomes.
Sir Michael believes that people who have autonomy or who are in control of their life enjoy better health and greater longevity.
He said that if we can make society more participatory and inclusive, the effect will be better public health.
He carried out the Strategic Review of Health Inequalities in England, also known as the Marmot Review, for the government and he chaired the World Health Organisation’s Commission on Social Determinants of Health.
Sir Michael is to give the annual discourse at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School in the Chowen Lecture Theatre from 6.30pm to 8pm on Thursday 2 October.
Although the lecture – Fair Society, Healthy Lives – is free, seats must be booked by going to sussex.ac.uk/bookalecture.
