Speeding Hove driver banned from the road

A speeding driver from Hove has been banned from getting back behind the wheel for 28 days and fined £500.

Robert Mear, 38, of St Aubyns, Hove, was caught breaking the 70mph speed limit on the A23 at Pyecombe on Sunday 15 September last year.

He initially denied the charge when he appeared before Brighton magistrates but changed his plea to guilty last Friday (29 August).

In court Mear was told that disqualification was obligatory because of his repeat offending and, as well as a ban, his licence was endorsed with three penalty points.

But he was given a reduced disqualification – a ban of just 28 days – after pleading mitigating circumstances.

He told the court that he was a sole trader, working by himself and was dependent on his job.

He had no assistance and if he was unable to work he would be at risk of losing his rented home.

Mear was also ordered to pay £300 prosecution costs and a £50 victim surcharge, making £850 in total.
