Brighton Marina: Kirsty Pollard on The Brighton Triathlon, Sunday 21 September 2014
Brighton Marina has hosted The Brighton Triathlon since 1990, a no frills, no fuss swim, cycle and run. The best place to see the triathlon is from the undercliff walk directly in line with the Master Marina pub, where the event starts in the harbour. From here you will be able to look down upon the melee that typifies a triathlon swim before the competitors spread out and swim the length of the inner harbour. They will round a buoy close to the Boatyard yard before heading back to exit near Marina Square.
A brisk walk back along the under-cliff will bring you to the transition point in the western corner of Asda Superstore’s car park. Here, the competitors extricate themselves from their wet suits (not always straightforward) and don their cycling gear, crash hats and so forth before heading out on the bike portion of the event.
The run takes you to Rottingdean along the under-cliff. It is quite a sun trap, and flat, and often a welcome relief after a very challenging and hilly bike course.
Whether a spectator or participant, Brighton Marina provides excellent facilities for all with shops, cafes, bars, cinema and a bowling alley to name a few, and offers free parking for Marina visitors (time limits apply).
