Celebcity: Norway’s NUART Festival 2014
The Mural Massive
This week, we bring you a street art special following our trip to Norway for the brilliant annual NUART festival. This global graffiti gathering is fast becoming one of the street art movement’s hottest tickets, bringing a stellar line-up of some of the most talented urban artists to the beautiful Norwegian town of Stavanger year after year. Artists that flew in to make their mark on the streets of the picturesque Scandinavian port on the West Coast of Norway include Spanish muralist Borondo, French star Tilt, and two home-grown artists – Martin Whatson and anonymous stencil master DOT DOT DOT.
I was blown away by the amazing work of Iranian stencil artists ICY & SOT (pictured). The brothers, who are resident in Brooklyn, put together a mammoth monochrome mural using hand-cut boards and over 80 hand-cut stencils. Also worth googling is Italian artist Fra Biancoshock, whose Facebook inspired ‘Swastika’ mural caused controversy. In Stavanger harbour, artist M City painted a beautiful mural on a 150m long supply ship that is now sailing the Norwegian seas, bringing the message of peace, love and street art to the masses.
