Brighton Marina: Kirsty Pollard on The Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race

Dragon Boat Race

The Rockinghorse Dragon Boat Race takes place here this Sunday 28 September in the inner harbour, Marina Square, with the action kicking off around 10am.

The dragon boats are 12 metres long and decorated in traditional dragons’ heads, tails and drums. Each boat will have 12-16 paddlers who will provide their vessel power, a drummer to beat a steady rhythm, and helm to steer. The dragons then race against each other for victory in what will be a spectacular energetic display.

Teams from across the city including Santander, City Cabs, Lloyds Bank and DYN are all competing for the crown of ‘Brighton Marina Rockinghorse Champion 2014’. Spectators will be able to see all the action from the viewing platform located along the undercliff walk.

There will be a bouncy castle, face painters, a children’s tombola and lots more to keep the little ones entertained in the square, while the adults enjoy the fabulous racing as well as the bars and restaurants available within the Marina.

Proceeds raised at this fundraising event will support the Rockinghorse Children’s Charity, the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital (the Alex) based in Brighton, and continued supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit.

Rockinghorse raise money for life-saving and cutting-edge medical equipment while ensuring that children are treated in an environment better suited to their needs.
