New Brighton mainline franchise means train fares could rise by 70 percent

Commuters have been faced with delays yet again as trains in and out of Brighton were disrupted.

And passengers should brace themselves for some more bad news as it has been revealed that fares could be set to rocket by 70 per cent when the new franchise begins next year.

In a statement, a spokeswoman for Govia’s parent company admitted that Thameslink fares would increase at a higher rate than Southerns.

This was so they would eventually equalize.

However she said the rate at which the fares are ‘harmonised’ is yet to be determined by the Government.
