In with the new
First up, we headed down to the opening of 8Forever, the new solo show by Ryan Callanan, AKA RYCA at Brighton’s coolest art gallery, Ink_d. Ryan’s list of fans and collectors include Kasabian and Russell Brand and fellow alias-toting superstar DJ Fatboy Slim. Norman came along to the opening to see the new work, and after what has been a busy summer of festivals and Ibiza gigs, it was great to see Fatboy back in town.

The pair have collaborated before, and Norman had the following to say about his artist partner in crime: “Ryan and I share the same fascinations, iconicisms and reference points. We’ve probably slept with the same women too ….” The show runs until 9 November at Ink_d on North Road: www.ink-d.co.uk

Midweek, we jetted off to the Big Apple for the debut of a new collection of work by the brilliant street artist Nick Walker. The show, ‘All I Ever Wanted Was My Name On Fire’, included 18 new and original canvasses by the artist whose intricate stencil work is truly awesome.

Nick emerged from the now infamous Bristol graffiti scene of the 1980s, and his signature character, the bowler-hatted ‘Vandal’ – who creates his art on the street while camouflaged as a pin-stripe suit wearing gent – can be seen on walls all over the world. Nicks global recognition has led to his work being featured in film and video, including Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut and the video for ‘I Gotta Feelin’ by The Black Eyed Peas.

Nick has also collaborated with Royal Doulton on a limited edition 3D sculpture (pictured) which will go on sale in January 2015.

The gallery on Broome Street in NYC’s Nolita district was filled to the roof with press, fans and collectors at the private view as everyone clamoured to meet and congratulate Nick. Among the crowd was British actor Sean Pertwee, who is in New York working on the Fox network’s new show Gotham. Sean, a huge art enthusiast and gallery owner, stars in the series as butler Alfred Pennyworth, an ex-marine hard man from the East End who loyally serves the young Bruce Wayne – the boy who will eventually become Batman.

Sean brought along another star of the crime series, Erin Richards who plays Barbara Kean, the fiancee of James Gordon in the hit show.
