Ellen Kent’s La Traviata

Verdi’s tragic tale of a “fallen woman” was brought to life on stage by some strong performances, including a captivating turn from Alyona Kistenyova as Violetta. The sweetly voiced Alfredo (Ruslan Zinevych) and Violetta made for a dynamic romantic couple, and the wooing scenes between them were the most moving and musically powerful. Vladimir Dragos stole all the scenes he was in however, charismatic and commanding as the villain father, and with a rich, sonorous voice too. The group scenes were also sung with gusto and funny in parts, although the pace dropped and the audience’s attention wandered slightly towards the end.
