Haydn’s Paris Symphony ‘La Poule’ (the hen) is a lovely way to begin a concert – optimistic, elegant and bright. Mozart’s final piano concerto offered a delicate contrast. Hewitt’s stylish, light touch made the great Steinway grand seem like a period instrument enjoying refined conversation with the chamber-sized orchestra. The slow movement was meltingly tender and the faster sections were so clear and graceful. Nothing was forced or exaggerated and the audience loved it.

Schubert’s 5th Symphony, so full of youthful energy and enthusiasm, made such a cheerful second half that the Sunday walk home seemed just a little bit warmer!
