Hove school wins share of £2bn funding pot

A Hove school has won a share of a £2 billion funding pot to carry out a modernisation of one of its buildings.

The money has been awarded to Hove Park School and Sixth Form by the government.

The news was announced today by the Education Secretary Nicky Morgan and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg.

Hove Park is one of 277 schools to have bid successfully for capital funding as part of the Priority School Building Programme.

None of the schools have been told how much they will receive yet but the average award is expected to be about £7 million.

The government said that the successful schools “will now have the condition needs in one or more of their buildings addressed as part of the programme”.

It added: “Scoping studies on all schools will commence from April onwards to assess the detailed work required, together with any specific site issues, and to review the best method and timescale for delivery.”

Hove Park is the first school in Brighton and Hove to win funding since the programme was announced in 2011.

Two head teachers who formerly taught in Hove and Portslade were celebrating the award of money to their new schools.

Ian Jungius used to teach at Portslade Community College, now the Portslade Aldridge Community Academy (PACA). He hopes to replace some outdated buildings at Willingdon Community School in Eastbourne.

And Nick Wergan, who left Blatchington Mill last summer to run Steyning Grammar School is looking forward to replacing old temporary classrooms with a modern purpose-built block.
