Stewart Lee: A Room With A Stew
You have to admire Stewart Lee. In spite of his success, he refuses to alter his surreal, caustic act to render it more approachable. In fact he spent chunks of the evening suggesting that his material wasn’t suited to these bigger stages, with contemptible “friends brought along” not getting it and spoiling the atmosphere. The first half was brilliant anyway, with a lengthy attempt at observational islamophobic humour resulting in a hilarious anecdote about a lady on a bus, and coining a new phrase in the endearing “like a child’s urine off an old man’s face”. An extended scatalogical UKIP story fell flat in the second half however.
