Anything Goes

This is a sure-fire crowd-pleaser, with colourful costumes, great songs and brilliant lyrics. Unfortunately the sound balance meant that those lyrics were occasionally drowned out by the band. The choreography by Alistair David deserves special mention, as the musical numbers are put over with plenty of pizzazz and bags of expert tap dancing; the two big production numbers ‘Blow Gabriel Blow’ and the titular ‘Anything Goes’ hitting it for six. That attention to detail and verve is somewhat lacking in the delivery of the book, but that doesn’t dampen the evening as the daffy plot serves only to string together the wonderful Cole Porter songs.
