Comedy: Bottoms up!
Toast the triumph of affordable comedy
Some people decide that they’re not going to go out and see live comedy because they think a ticket price might be too expensive. It’s not. And I know this because of the number of shows that come up that are simply too good to be believed at twice the price.
Case in point would be the current run currently on sale under the banner of ‘One Pint Comedy’ at Otherplace @ The Basement at the moment – with two entire show previews from professional comedians for only £4.50 the pair in one evening. And if you’re a student, senior, on Job Seekers Allowance, NHS staff, an Equity member or under 16 (where appropriate) it’s only £3.50. Literally, comedy names off the telly for less than a pint, and you can even buy yourself a pint while you’re there because they’ve got their own bar.
Still think I’m blowing hot air? Then check out this list of esteemed comics running through their new shows and sharing a bill for pennies. We have (deep breath) Angela Barnes and respected podcaster and comic Stuart Goldsmith on Tuesday 21 April, Joe Lycett and Pippa Evans performing on Wednesday 22 April, Romesh Ranganathan and Ivo Graham on Tuesday 14 April, Julian Deane and Alex Smith on Wednesday 15 April, plus Gareth Richards and Steve Hall on Wednesday 8 April.
These are all works in progress, but they’re good enough for these hugely successful and acclaimed comedians to be prepared to take them out and put their names to these shows in a public arena. That’s their livlihoods. And, I re-iterate, all for the cost of a pint to you. If you can’t support live comedy with all this going for you, you might just want to face the fact that it’s not the cost of a ticket that’s stopping you going out.
