With charities looking to offer help to those suffering, Latest TV’s Mhairi Beveridge asks what more can be done….
Yesterday, I ran into a neighbour whilst in George Street, Hove who told me a young man living in the Ellen Street low-rise flats between the Clarendon Road towerblocks had hung himself behind the Church Road Tesco a few weeks ago.
At 4am Mill View told him to go home, as they had no beds. Instead, he made his way down to the area behind Tesco (a long walk at 4am) and killed himself.
We have created a society that not everyone can cope with, one way or another. And we need to find the compassion from somewhere to create safe harbours for the casualties and those whose mental and emotional illnesses cannot be tossed out to “Care in the Community” – one of the most evil of the Margaret Thatcher Conservative Party moves 25-30 years ago.
The continued emphasis on volunteers and local authorities (cash-choked by the Coalition) to replace the closed institutions with all their expertise and places of safety capacity is callous.
