The Ghost Train
Who believes in ghosts these days? Well, perhaps most of the audience enjoying Arnold Ridley’s classic comedy thriller do, when the tragedy is recalled with such stolid clout by veteran star Jeffrey Holland. Set in a remote 1920s railway waiting room, it’s important to keep everything claustrophobic enough. Could the players maintain the fraught atmosphere while a cataclysmic Cornish storm is presented by just a few flashing lights and restrained rumbles? Oh yes, the convincing ensemble cast do this excellently by playing it straight. Even foolish ‘Teddie Deakin’ is believable. The shocks are delivered with perfect hesitations and comic timing.
