Beyond: Circa

My memories of circus go back to the days of Billy Smart, lions, tigers and liberty ponies. I’m glad all that has gone, the animal cruelty was unacceptable for sure. I’m glad too that circus skills have re-emerged and will be preserved and Circa are certainly at the forefront of keeping them alive. Do I like it? Well I do, to a certain extent. It’s thrilling and enthralling on so many levels and the atmosphere created in the Dome was electric as the audience gasped and oohed with both delight and terror as this accomplished troupe put their bodies to the test. But part way in I started to tire of their physical exertions, the extremes to which they push themselves paled in repetition. Nor did it have the magical beauty of their performance at All Saints. This of course is totally personal, I did enjoy it – but not as much as I wanted to and as for the audience, they clearly thought this was five star stuff.
