Brighton’s Arty: Alison Krog
A rude awakening for Church Street
Of course we’re biased because we live there. But the North Laine is still one of the coolest stomping grounds in the city. And it keeps its edginess thanks to the artists and independents that choose to set up innovative artspaces and shops within this vibrant territory. So we were delighted to learn that the irrepressible Louise Dear is opening an exciting new gallery in Church Street that will be serving up a programme of serious art in relaxed surroundings, promising ‘no barriers, no pretence’.
After a decade working down in the Devon countryside, Louise is back in Brighton and determined to make an impression with CRUSH. Says the artist: “I loved the quiet beauty of Devon, but now crave the colour and energy of the city. It’s time for some action. I’m ready to take my art further than ever before. I’ve found a great studio with a spacious gallery – a place to work and a permanent display. It’s just what I have always wanted.”
To Louise, Brighton isn’t just a source of inspiration, it’s a source of energy thanks to the heady, swirling mix of day-trippers, buzzing seaside kitsch and city slick: where silicon beach rubs shoulders with artistic bohemia. Brighton gives Louise the energy to charge her creative batteries. And as you can see – these paintings take a lot of energy! “They are completely exhausting to make,” says Louise. “It’s as if all my energy is absorbed into them.”
CRUSH gallery (19 Church Street) is opening on Saturday 16 May with ‘RUDE’ – an exhibition showing Louise’s paintings alongside the sculpture of Lucianne Lassalle. It’s a perfect mix, with just a hint of humour, so make sure you check it out.
