Stage: …riding through the glen
Robin Hood and his merry men ride into Herstmonceaux
Okay, you have to be of a certain age to recognise this week’s headline – but if you do it will conjure up visions of curly haired Richard Green and his crew dashing around Sherwood Forest, fighting the Sherrif of Nottingham and rescuing Maid Marian. Ah yes, not for me the lame Hollywood Robin Hood with its glitzy productiuon values and American accents.
This Summer you could relive the Robin Hood legend with the Cambridge Theatre company as they tour their own outdoor musical version of the classic tale.
The nearest venue will be the fabulous grounds of Herstmonceux Castle, once belonging to the Admiralty, it became the new home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory. From the early 1950s until 1989 Herstmonceux Castle remained a centre of scientific research and home to one of the world’s leading astronomical organizations. However, “light pollution” from the nearby city of Eastbourne, along with other factors, combined to make staying at Herstmonceux impractical and in 1989 the RGO was moved to Cambridge.
It is now a great day out for families and history lovers and makes an ideal venue for this production. Cambridge Touring Theatre is throwing down a challenge with this year’s production for families.
Voted one of the top ten events to do in the summer by The Guardian the storyline will be faithful to its origins but decorated sufficiently to keep a young audience fully involved.
Hailed as a “Most enjoyable… colourful costumes… an extremely funny and lively family show. ” by The Stage this is a chance to have a joyful, fun-filled time with your family as you watch this hilarious musical show full of their usual zest and vim!
Boys and girls are invited to come along dressed in their best Sherwood fashion. Robin? Marian? Sheriff? Knights? You’ll meet them all. I hope that they are inviting adults to dress up too, why should the kids have all the fun?
Cambridge Touring Theatre was founded in 2000 by Rosie Humphreys.
