Gregory Porter
Probably the best loved jazz singer of his time, Porter returned to Sussex with all but one of his long serving quartet. The camaraderie was clearly evident as the musicians interacted seamlessly with the vocalist and each other. Throughout the show we were treated to honey-flavoured soulful tones giving way to skilful scatting with superb solos from all. Two spotlit duets with pianist Chip Crawford were stunning and a fired-up ‘Work Song’ was bookended by Emanuel Harold’s powerful drum solos. The delicate jazz waltz ‘Be Good’ was simply beautiful and, the unfortunately apt, ‘1960 What’s’ civil rights anthem concluded a perfect show.
