Carlos Acosta: On Before

‘On Before’ was a series of 9 brief dance pieces and the first part featured some fascinating synchronisation in a repetitive spoken word piece, resulting in strangely distinctive staccato steps. Acosta was the star, with a beguiling piece called ‘Two’ particularly impressing. Loud DJ Shadow-type music from Andy Cowton perfectly complemented precise arm movements with blurry, intoxicating lighting effects. Zenaida Yanowsky was also stunning however, gracefully dancing in a carefully twitchy way in ‘Sirin’ then appearing quietly majestic and dignified in ‘Footnote To Ashton’ (featuring both candles and Handel’s oratorio). The diversity of music and visuals was transfixing and carefully directed, and a lengthy ovation proved that Acosta’s aim to both thrill and move the audience was a beautiful success.
