Brighton Philharmonic Summer Season – Jonathan Price (bassoon)

Sussex alumnus Barry Mills has a large following in Brighton and his work is well known in the offices of The Latest, so it was no surprise to find the church full today. His sea-shore inspired String Quartet (2007), like a water-colour sketch, was perfect for a wistful summer afternoon. Gordon Jacob’s Suite for Bassoon and Strings hit the spot too, lively and tuneful. Of course, the lightness of touch of Ani Batikian and Leo Payne (violins), Roland Roberts (viola) and Peter Adams (cello) made these performances to treasure. They concluded this very successful mini-season with Haydn’s flamboyant ‘Rider’ Quartet.

CODA: The next Brighton Philharmonic season starts 11 October with Stephen Hough (piano). A generous 50% student discount is available.
