Day of Devastation at Shoreham Airshow

BREAKING

Investigations are underway after seven people were killed and several injured when an aircraft crashed on the A27 at Shoreham.

The pilot of the aircraft is in a serious condition in hospital.

The Hawker Hunter was taking part in the town’s air show at Shoreham airport when it crashed on to the road and ended up in a bush at 1.20pm on Saturday (22 August).

Eyewitnesses described the plane as flying extremely low to the ground moments before it made impact.

Specialist teams from the The Air Accident Investigation Bureau will be carrying out enquiries and the road will be shut for the rest of the weekend.

Anyone who took any photos or videos of the incident is being asked to contact Sussex Police to assist with enquiries.

Organisers of the Shoreham Air Show issued this statement:

“Shoreham Airshow will not be taking place tomorrow (Sunday 23 August), because of the serious nature of today’s incident. We would like to apologise for the inconvenience this may cause, but we hope the public will understand our decision.”

South East Coast Ambulance Service declared a major incident and West Sussex Fire and Rescue deployed 10 appliances to the site.
