A Night At The Opera

Music Theatre 2000 presented an evening at the atmospheric Emporium, featuring solos, duets and other selections from popular operas. Six singers were accompanied by pianist and musical director Simon Gray, and some of the opening pieces were the most moving. A baritone/tenor duet from Bizet’s ‘The Pearlfishers’ featured delicate harmonies and a soaring finale. Soprano Karen Orchin’s aria from Puccini’s ‘La Rondine’ was beautiful, clear and pleasantly loud, while Gavin Sayers’ tenor aria from Verdi’s ‘A Masked Ball’ was rich and robust. The generous programme also included Mozart, Bellini and Gounod, resulting in a fun, informal and excellent value opportunity to hear classic opera in a relaxed setting.
