The Great Gatsby
Blackeyed Theatre, in association with South Hill Park, presents the world premiere of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Adapted by Stephen Sharkey.
Immersing you in the decadence of America’s ‘Jazz Age’, The Great Gatsby is brought to life in this sizzling new stage adaptation from nationally acclaimed Blackeyed Theatre. Recreating the sights, sounds and feel of America’s ‘Roaring Twenties’ as seen through the eyes of Nick Carraway, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s masterpiece is a brilliant evocation of a society obsessed with wealth and status.
Adapted by Stephen Sharkey, whose work includes The May Queen (Liverpool Everyman) and The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui (Liverpool Playhouse/Nottingham Playhouse), this exciting new production features fabulous live music alongside the timeless language of Fitzgerald’s Great American Novel to create a truly fresh and inspiring theatrical experience.
Blackeyed Theatre Company was established in 2004 to create exciting opportunities for artists and audiences alike. Their theatre is challenging yet accessible for both new and established audiences. It asks questions and invites reaction. It provokes only as live performance can.
Since 2004, Blackeyed Theatre has embarked on twelve national UK tours, including in 2008 the world premiere of Steven Berkoff’s Oedipus. Its first new writing project resulted in a three-week London run of The Beekeeper in 2012, which was nominated for three Off West End Theatre Awards, including Best New Play. In 2009, Blackeyed Theatre became an associate company of South Hill Park Arts Centre.
By bringing together artists with a genuine passion for the work they produce, and offering a theatrical experience that’s both artistically excellent and affordable, audiences and theatres are far more sustainable in the long term, and by responding to demand, they ensure that more people see innovative theatre.
