We’re always bemoaning the miserly ratio of wallspace to artists in a city that’s teeming with such a wealth of creative talent. So it’s great to hear that Kellie Miller has been hard at work opening up the lower ground floor of her eponymous gallery in Market Street, which has more than doubled its space. If you’re passing by, pop in and enjoy an exciting collection of artwork from the gallery’s regular artists alongside some KMA newbies.
JacquelineHammond
Another Arty favourite who’s been beavering away in her diversification from painting to textiles is Jacqueline Hammond. ‘Jaxx’ is renowned for producing strong, punchy images that are rich in texture and colour. Her immediate inspiration comes from direct observation, and her subject matter is plucked from the world encountered every day. But whether inspired by the street, seascape or landscape, Jacqueline’s work has a consistently striking edge. Now she’s finding fame under the Smartdeco brand – her Country Lane deckchair shown here featured in ‘Five of the best designer deckchairs’ in the Evening Standard this year.

Out of town: since Chalk Gallery opened in Lewes 10 years ago, more than 100 local artists have benefited from exhibiting and learning new skills through collectively running the business. From 2-14 October the success of this enterprise will be celebrated in a special exhibition at the Towner Gallery, Eastbourne, showing work from 81 current and ex-members. This event will be accompanied by the publication of a beautiful commemorative book.
