Local choir sing at Rugby World Cup
We Bop appeared at Brighton Community Stadium this weekend to sing national anthems of the teams playing the Rugby World Cup. The choir were privileged to sing the South African and Japanese anthems on the field of play at the historic match that saw the world cup holders lose in the dying seconds of the match. On Sunday they sang the USA and Samoan anthems in the glorious sunshine and were given a big hand by the crowd as they walked off the pitch.
Progress Productions approached the choir after being impressed by Youtube footage of their recent summer concert at St Luke’s Church. The all-female community choir, who rehearse in the Queens Park area of Brighton, were joined by male singers from a number of different Sussex choirs including Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus, Jam Tarts and Sussex Harmonisers.
They have all been rehearsing extremely hard over the past few weeks to learn the languages of the Japanese, South African and Samoan anthems. Rachel Myer, We Bop Choir’s founder and Musical Director has been running extra rehearsals at her own home to help choir members learn the languages. “Learning the anthems’ lyrics by heart was a real challenge for the choir, but one we have relished. To stand on the pitch with the rugby players before their first world cup match, and to sing their national anthems in front of 30,000 people was an incredible experience. We Bop Choir love performing and it is safe to say that this was our biggest gig yet!” – Rachel Myer, Musical Director We Bop Choir.
