Comedy: Let Me Tell You A Story…
Some of the Brighton Comedy Festival’s coming attractions share a Brighton tale…
Sarah Kendall – A Day In October, Brighton Dome, Studio Theatre, Sunday 18 October, £14.50/12.50
“One afternoon I was in Brighton, killing time before a gig. I was in a charity shop which had a box filled with old black and white photographs. The photos dated back to around the 1930s, pictures of people (who would now all be dead) at family gatherings, picnics, weddings, and other occasions. I couldn’t just walk out and leave all those people in that cardboard box. I bought fifteen photos, and I keep them with all my photos of my own family so they don’t get lonely or feel forgotten. I basically adopted a bunch of long-dead Brighton residents.”
Sean Kelly – Live!, Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange, Saturday 17 October, 7.30pm, £16.50/14
“I will never forget the two days I spent in Brighton alone right after filming the final episode of Storage Hunters UK series 2 in nearby Petersfield. I decided last minute to go to Brighton, get a hotel on the beach and take a relaxing bicycle ride along the ocean. I went to hire a bicycle and all they had left was a weird bike called a triplet – it’s built for three riders. So with my heart set on riding a bike, I hire this thing. After riding along the ocean, I decide to ride into Brighton. I get stopped by a couple visiting from France who think I am some kind of bicycle tour guide of Brighton. So they ask me how much to give them the tour. I tell them 25 pounds each and they have to help peddle. They don’t even realize I am American and know less about Brighton than they do. I tour them around Brighton giving them made up historical facts. By the end they invited me to attend their wedding in France.”
Hardeep Singh Kohli – Big Mouth Strikes Again, Brighton Dome, Studio Theatre, Friday 16 October, 7.30pm, £13/11
“A couple of years ago I was booked as a guest on the BBC’s Question Time. At the time I lived in London and it was taking place at Fort William in the Highlands of Scotland. I booked a flight up to Glasgow and dutifully jumped on the train to Gatwick. One hour later, I woke up just outside of Brighton, having fallen asleep and missed my stop. For quite some time I genuinely considered strolling down to the pier, tucking into some fish & chips and sacking off Question Time. That’s the draw of Brighton; once you are there, it’s tough to pull yourself away…”
