Sofie Hagen – Bubblewrap

It’s easy to see how this charming and confident hour won the Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe this year. Youthful weirdness has always been fertile ground for comedians and Hagen mined her weirder than most Westlife obsession for embarrassing stories and some truly excruciating fan-fiction. All this could stand on its own but what sets it apart is how she uses the Westlife fixation as a prism to examine her past mental health and body issues. To her credit she kept the material light and funny even at the darkest points. Very much recommended.
