Brighton’s Arty: Alison Krog
Australia on the doorstep
There may be no such thing as a free lunch. But we’re delighted to learn that you can unleash your inner artist for free at the Bailey Alexander Gallery in the new West Pier arches. The hospitable team at this bright and welcoming artspace are holding an exciting series of free art workshops on Thursday evenings throughout the year.
Open to everyone, each event will be hosted by one of the gallery’s resident artists and will include practical sessions and talks on a range of different artistic techniques. There will be the opportunity to chat over a drink afterwards – so what’s not to love? Beginners and pros are welcome; and the classes promise to a relaxed, enjoyable opportunity to explore and experiment with art in a gallery setting.
The first session takes place on 26 November. Led by local artist Peter Spence, it will be a hands-on exploration of commonalities between classic Pointillism and Aboriginal dream painting – a traditional Australian art form. Upcoming workshops include sessions on bringing characters to life with illustrator Jasmine Mercer, painting animals with Kirsty Craghill and capturing architectural perspective with Richard Marsh. Inspired? Then email fbailey@baileyalexander.co.uk to book your place or find out more.
Don’t miss: We mentioned the launch of the Corridor Gallery a couple of weeks ago. And blow me, if they haven’t set up a show by one of our favourite Brighton artists (and North Laine neighbour) Chris MacDonald. If you’ve never experienced the MacDonald effect, expect to be blown away by his surreal re-imagining of found objects that encompass everything from musical instruments to false teeth! Head to York Place from 7 November for three weeks.
