BREMF – ‘The Marvel of our Century’ – Harmonia Artificiosa

Elicia Silverstein (violin) and John McKean (harpsichord) were sensational last year in the Latest Music Bar as part of Early Music Live!, BREMF’s invaluable showcase for young aspiring musicians. Now, with Alon Portal (viola da gamba), they celebrated the 350th anniversary of the ‘marvel’ Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, a woman leading the way in what was very much the man’s world of Louis XVI.

Two of her sonatas were played alongside works by her contemporaries, François Couperin and Jean-Féry Rebel. This stately programme, while quite different from last year’s musical fireworks, was just as virtuosic and very well received.
