Brighton’s Arty: Alison Krog

Out of the shadows

Excited to hear that Dynamite Gallery on Trafalgar Street is hosting a solo show by Sam Hewitt. We fell in love with Sam’s distinctive style back in 2009 when we interviewed him for the very first issue of Brighton’s Arty magazine. Too cool for conventional art school, he found his vocation via stints in performing arts, stilt walking and playing in a band for seven years.
Fortunately Hewitt realised that painting was what he should be doing. And now he works in oils, sketching and pencil, charcoal and photography. He works on top of old paintings, working against them to allow ‘accidents’, but also on inviolate surfaces with the accidents minimised.SAmHewitt
Having lived in Brighton since 1990, Sam is completely influenced by the city and describes its combination of light, spaces and people his constant muse. If you’re in the North Laine area, do go and experience his work first hand. It’s impossible to do justice to the amazing luminosity that brings to life the shadowy figures that cross his canvases. A must-see. Until 29 November.

Don’t miss: In Farm Mews, Naked Eye Gallery is currently celebrating the natural world from a zoological perspective with its ‘ANIMAL’ exhibition. The show is a varied and dynamic blend of the photo real, the surreal and 3D work by renowned and respected artists Sara Abbott, Dylan Floyd, Susan Taylor, Lauren Alderslade and 3D ceramicist James Fenner among others. Pieces range from exotic beasts and extraordinary hybrid creatures to the quintessential English small mammals. Each artist has created an impressive body of work, each unique, all utterly charming in their own right – and fuelled by a shared passion for animals. Until 29 November.
