Men In The Cities

Deftly jutting between a variety of male characters, Chris Goode’s monologue revolved around an unexplained suicide of a gay man and the murder of drummer Lee Rigby in 2013. Employing the increasingly common ‘Magnolia’-like technique of intertwining characters whose fates collide, a searing diatribe towards the end was a powerful, eloquent culmination, although it lacked the lyrical humanity of the rest of the piece. The finale was strangely disjointed from the rest of the monologue but this enhanced the thought-provoking essence of the whole performance, filled with vibrant characters for the audience to discuss and try to understand how they relate to the whole. Bravura storytelling performed with quiet, engrossing verve.
