Built To Spill
The American indie guitar stalwart’s long-awaited Brighton show had an air of a victory lap about it, with generous fans happy to be seeing them. The fans’ excitement for older tracks unfortunately wasn’t matched with the occasionally tired feel of the performances, except for a more raucous finale that built up some real momentum. The musicianship was impressive however, with accomplished chiming effects and rich tones from guitarist and singer Doug Martsch. Martsch sometimes shifted to rhythm guitar while backed by lead which created a brilliant dynamic of varied sounds and styles. A great set from a talented rock band, but lacking a little in zest and vigour.
