The Tiger Lilies – Lulu

The dark comic theatre of the Tiger Lilies turned its twisted gaze on the tale of Lulu, a tragic odyssey of a girl’s life, moving through child prostitution, death and extortion at the hands of the men of London and Paris. More dark in its telling than comic in the first half, with Lulu herself barely a line-sketch in comparison to the development of her male tormentors – also perversely portrayed on occasion as the victims of her circumstance – this was beautifully staged. The second half of the performance saw the accompanying ‘Lulu’ dancer come into her own with an epic pairing with the inspired set and lighting arrangement. The Tiger Lilies themselves – excellent musicians and performers as always – were compelling storytellers, taking us from the sharp clean lines of the Concert Hall to the depths of depravity with aplomb.
