Governomics by Ian McAuley and Miriam Lyons

Governomics by Ian McAuley and Miriam Lyons

preview_preview[1]

Since the global financial crisis of 2008-9, many governments used reserves and borrowed extensively to support the banking sector and have subsequently implemented harsh austerity measures to reduce budget deficits. Governomics challenges current, mainstream political thinking by claiming that austerity is actually undermining economic growth. Ian and Miriam discuss academic research, theory and analysis with particular reference to historic and modern political developments in Australia. The book argues that it “makes good economic sense for governments to invest in health and education, to provide transport infrastructure, to protect natural resources” and “to see that the benefits of economic activity are distributed fairly” (p12).
