Brighton’s Arty: Alison Krog
Not as simple as ABC
We’ve just come across the work of JanaNicole, and we can’t wait to share! Her art offers memories in mixed media: upcycled materials evoking a myriad of emotions that range from the spiritual to the comical, the classically familiar to the downright bizarre. She was raised in the desert of Southern California, among the backdrop of social and political change of the late 1960s, and trained as an artist at the California University of Northridge, then furthering her studies at The American College, London, during the mid-eighties.
Now resident in the UK, JanaNicole exhibits her work regularly in and around London and the South East as well as in her native Palm Springs. Her A-Z series was brings to the fore a cacophony of emotions that draw audiences into a familiar and welcoming place that allows them to focus undisturbed on her works and wallow in their own personal memories.
With her ‘Cereals’ you can hear the crinkle of the bag that holds the toy and the ‘Snap, Crackle and Pop’ from the cereal it is concealed within. With ‘Games’ you can imagine the clicking of the mousetrap falling to the board and the clacking of the Lido bubble as the dice fly within the dome. You’ll find yourself remembering rainy days and holidays, popcorn and toffee apples, projectors and train sets.
JanaNicole’s style is contemporary yet retro, simple yet sophisticated, innocent yet divisive. Personal messages abound among the upcycled chaos that affronts you with her works as you enter a world that look immediately familiar, and yet on closer inspection provides much more meaningful imagery to explore.
JanaNicole will be one of the artists featuring in our new publication Art in Brighton 2016 and has an upcoming solo show at the Corridor Gallery this year. Watch this space for more.
