Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra, Matthew Trusler (violin) Barry Wordsworth (conductor)

The exuberant overture to Weber’s neglected opera ‘Oberon’ gave a robust and cheery start to this concert, and it needed to be full-bodied to contend with an infuriating buzz from the Dome’s sound-enhancement system. Fortunately, this was turned off for Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No1, and just as well, because otherwise Matthew Trusler’s sprightly and perceptive reading would have been ruined. His charm and the Philharmonic’s magic then soothed our indignation at the hall’s temporary shortcomings and delivered a splendid performance.

A gloriously detailed rendition of Brahms’ 3rd Symphony, steady but with plenty of drive, made this another really satisfying programme.
