It’s official – Brighton’s Lewes Road scheme is actually increasing congestion
An award winning transport project to reduce congestion on one of the city’s busiest roads has actually boosted air pollution.
The four million pound Lewes Road scheme opened two years ago to much acclaim.
But a report presented to councillors admitted it has not helped to reduce air quality.
It adds more than 1,000 cars a day have been redirected though Woodingdean and Rottingdean.
The report blames a “street canyon effect” of close together buildings which is preventing pollutants from escaping.
A council spokeswoman said the weather could also affect readings.
