Brighton and Palestinian Young Musicians Together, Andy Sherwood (conductor)

These young performers were gathered from the Purcell School, the Yehudi Menuhin School, The Brighton Youth Orchestra, The Royal Academy of Music and the National Youth Orchestra. They arranged the complex programme for this evening’s concert themselves and it came together brilliantly. From Bach to Beethoven, via Bartok and Barrière, there was plenty to enjoy with tremendous variety and prodigious talent. The premiere of Guy Richardson’s ‘Houryia (Freedom)’ was very warmly received. This sold-out fundraising event will help bring students from The Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine to Brighton for a concert in St Michael’s, 4th June.

Thank you for this very positive review. As one of the organisers I just want to say how moving it was that so many very, very, talented young UK musicians so generously gave their time and their talents to support the concert we are planning with young musicians from Gaza in June. As members of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign in Brighton & Hove, we spend a lot of our time hearing about cruelty and injustice. The concert yesterday evening – with its transcendental music and the brilliant young musicians – provided us with a chance to reflect on those things that make life worth living and fighting for, and reinforces our struggle for human rights in Palestine.
