Darkness to Light – Brighton Chamber Choir

Jane Money’s well-rehearsed choir usually sings with an orchestral accompaniment so this a capella programme, with the occasional solo cello, was a test of their tuning and stamina. So was the variety of the programme: differing styles of plainchant; High Renaissance masterworks; English Cathedral staples and popular compositions by Tavener, MacMillan, Gjielo and Whitacre. The sombre Lenten music contrasted well with radiant musical descriptions of heaven. Kat Carson (soprano) and Susi Knight (cello) the ensemble soloists and the choir made excellent use of the Gothic acoustic, floating high notes in Allegri’s ‘Miserere’ and delivering rich bass resonances in the Tavener.
