Meaty Treats at Stock Burger

I will be honest from the get go and say that I am only occasionally tempted by the idea of a burger. They did not form a part of my childhood and have to be very good indeed to excite me. Few are very good with one or two notable exceptions here in Brighton that I have written about in the last two years. So when I was invited along to the launch of Stock Burger I accepted with trepidation.
First impressions were good, what is not to love about a bar that champions local ales, beers and spirits. I started off an impressive espresso martini made with my favourite Blackdown Gin. It was the first of many excellent drinks that night…

It was no big, come one come all celeb ‘B’ list affair, but a far more contained event with many of my foodie writer chums and a good representation of the suppliers that the restaurant, part of a new chain, have engaged with. Each made a short and informative speech before the main event, the food.
I was invited to choose a main course and spotting a braised short rib, or Jacob’s ladder, I was able to sidestep the burger. I need not have worried as fellow guests tucked into some pretty impressive ones.
First though came an array of side dishes and starters, and they were good, better than good in fact and in particular the chicken wings which were delicious, they were exceptional and I was in grave danger of peaking too soon as I scoffed them down.
So finally that short rib. My word, what a treat, the best since a memorable short rib at the Michelin starred Curlew at Bodiam. Now that is praise indeed. It was everything a sweet cured beef rib should be, a sticky, unctuous, falling off the bone treat. A perfect blend of sweet and savoury. It was big too, and after my chicken wing fest I was sadly beaten. I was pretty beaten by the puds which I only payed lip service too, but my fellow guests were enthused and made light work of them.

I liked Stock Burger, I liked the stylish and comfortable interior. It may be part of a growing chain but it has an individual look, and a fabulous position overlooking the sea. I liked too the fact that it works as both bar and restaurant and with their policy of great beers and cocktails it makes an attractive new option when meeting friends, especially as after a few drinks you can easily stay on and dine at prices that by modern standards seemed to be very easy on the wallet. I hope to go back soon, and maybe I will have one of those very impressive burgers.
