Ludovico Einaudi

The most streamed classical artist in the UK played two sold out nights at the Dome, and the atmosphere was excitable. The emotive piano pieces with pleasant repeated phrases was a little too simple for this reviewer’s taste, but the reception was rapturous so I might have missed something. The first half’s focus on his recent album ‘Elements’ had few memorable moments but the second half’s more popular pieces had more bite to them, along with more varied instrumentation. Louder, rockier parts suggested a more interesting dynamic direction, while a water gong and a fancy metal birdcage added some variety to the soundworld. Although the glib melodies might work well on soundtracks, the formulaic nature of Einaudi’s music was exposed in the stark focus of a concert setting.
