Smoke and Mirrors

Only a year ago I decided that, despite the skills shown and the thrills experienced, circus art based shows were not for me. Last night I discovered that I was wrong. The Ricochet Project have created a work that takes those skills and uses them in an exquisitely artistic way, an aerial and floor based acrobatic ballet that had me rapt from the moment the lights came up and exposed them entwined on a trapeze, dressed in drab day wear, to the final moment when once again dressed they resumed their “ordinary” personas. In between we were shown a life less ordinary, skills extraordinary and creativity that left all other circus art based shows groveling in the sawdust. Cohdi Harrell and Laura Stokes are both creators and performers of this incredible show which strangely enough, despite the suggestion of trickery in the title, is an utterly transparent exposition of real skills used to create a great and beautiful performing art.
