Brontë Hudnott (flute) Joseph Havlat (piano)

These two virtuoso musicians are perfectly matched in the delicacy and power of their performance. They gave us C.P.E. Bach’s ‘Hamburger’ sonata to demonstrate their solid Classical foundation and then introduced us to three beautiful, and wickedly demanding, more recent works. Veteran Australian John Carmichael’s ‘Fantasy Sonata’, Philippe Gaubert’s ‘Ballade’ (he was a colleague of Ravel), and two contrasting parts of a suite by Joseph Havlat himself, who is clearly not just an excellent pianist. Poulenc’s exacting ‘Flute Sonata’ completed this very enjoyable programme. I look forward to their prompt return to the Festival, perhaps with a full evening recital.
