The Marian Consort – Breaking the Rules

These six perfectly balanced, exactly tuned young voices are at the top of their game. They sang Carlo Gesualdo’s bitter-sweet polyphony with exquisite precision and breath-taking confidence, almost without a conductor, just occasionally with Jamie Akers on the lute. Their performance was the musical core of Clare Norburn’s enthralling dramatization of this princely wife-murderer’s tragic life, giving vocal substance to his guilty grief. Gerald Kyd played the haunted prince with bravura venom and pathos. However foul his crimes, if he ever heard voices as beautiful as the Marian Consort in his head then he is probably in heaven by now!
