The Brian Jonestown Massacre

With 2004’s cult documentary Dig! continuing to nurture new waves of fans, there is always a contingent in the crowd who crave a dose of the legendary BJM dysfunction and drama alongside their shoegaze-tinged psychedelic rock. Less prone to starting onstage fights since calming his infamous drug-taking, mercurial band-leader Anton Newcombe dutifully directs some adrenaline-fuelling, comically misanthropic outbursts tonight at a gaggle of goading fans. His rants punctuate an immersive two hour set that sees a healthy mix of newer material and crowd-pleasers plucked from a vast catalogue, the band’s muscular wall of guitars and Newcombe’s plaintive vocals gathering a compelling intensity.
