St Paul & The Broken Bones

Fresh from their Glastonbury appearance the day before, the eight-strong Alabama soul revivalists made their Brighton debut in front of a devoted audience. The soaring vocals of Paul Janeway dominated throughout, backed by an on-the-money rhythm section and a punchy brass trio that resembled the Memphis Horns. The set was split between songs from their forthcoming ‘Sea Of Noise’ album and selections from their back catalogue, all complimented with sultry arrangements and Janeway’s Otis-like gospel tone. There were classic ’70s sounding Southern soul stompers but the impassioned ballads stood out and the entire band played with great energy and passion.
