Abso-bloody-lutely

My life is, and has been for as long as I can remember, peppered with the charming, and sometimes not so charming, efforts of PRs, yes the driven public relations pixies who feed us with the news of… well the news of what’s new.
Some are good, some are excellent and some are, well let’s not go there, the good ones know who they are and the bad ones do a good job of pretending that they are good ones, that’s PR for you.

Many years ago I had to deal with a PR company that was held in very high esteem. I was designing book covers back then and had just done a cover for a book called ‘The Green Consumer Guide’. It was destined to be a huge title and indeed it was. The editor felt that the potential required the attentions of a top PR company, and not our in-house team. One was duly appointed and charged with creating that “PR” buzz, which of course they dictated required a big party.
The book was edited and designed and the cover was approved, a beautifully executed drawing of our planet that was also a beautifully drawn apple. Imagine my face when the PR company delivered the party invites with a drawing of a rose growing through the cracks in a pavement. What the…? Was this Ab Fab pre-empted?
It’s now twenty four years since Eddy (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley) first tottered onto our screens and now ‘Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie’ arrives. In the face of a media firestorm after an attempt to schmooze Kate Moss goes spectacularly awry, PR agent Eddy and magazine editor Patsy escape to their spiritual home – the French Riviera. The result is a fun-in-the-sun caper where even Botox won’t stop you smiling. Break out the Bolly and the Stoly and catch it at Picturehouse’s very stylish Duke’s at Komedia.
