Brighton Philharmonic Summer Season, Daniel Bhattacharya (violin), Caroline Harrison (viola), Peter Adams (cello)

The BPO’s chamber music summer series continued with a such a high quality programme that it is difficult to pick a highlight. Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major was stunning, played in an emotive, expertly bustling manner that brought a fresh spirit to such a familiar piece. This concert’s Brighton Connection was a premiere of local 18 year old Jack Redman’s Insects for 3, which utilised five small movements to fun effect. The wasp was plonkingly ominous, the dragonfly more airy and elegant, the moths harmonious, and the ants gave us a vigorous ending. Halvorsen’s Passacaglia (after Handel) was a taut and thrilling finale: Bhattacharya and Adams’ ferocious playing was a delight.
