Brighton Philharmonic Summer Season, Roland Roberts (violin), Leo Payne (violin), Richard Cookson (viola), Ben Rogerson (cello), Alun Darbyshire (oboe)

Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s commitment to local modern music is both admirable and enjoyable, and local composer Guy Richardson’s Meditation on Gibbons’ 20th Fantasia was a sharp opening piece, centring around Ben Rogerson’s resolute, sturdy playing. Finzi’s Interlude for Oboe and String Quartet Op.21 shimmered beautifully, with flawlessly measured, emotive oboe from Alun Darbyshire. The sustained, high pitched violin ending was interpreted in a tense but gorgeous way. Dvořák’s American string quartet was exciting and sweeping, played at a gallop while still conveying the luxurious, spirited melodies of the work. The successful programme once again showcased the varied charm and musical depth of chamber music, which the BPO offer in intimate surroundings over the summer.
